WHOIS is a protocol which makes it an easy task to see the information a given domain name has been registered with through a command line or through the use of special web-based lookup sites. This info includes the names, address and email address of the owner, admin, tech and billing persons in addition to the registrar business the domain address has been purchased through, the creation and expiration dates. With the exception of a few country-code TLDs that have specific limitations, the WHOIS details of any domain can be changed freely whenever you want, which is quite important since in accordance with the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details must be current and valid at all times. Failing to comply with these policies may result in losing the ownership of a domain name and in some cases a domain address could even be deleted from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
